The Deschutes River begins at Little Lava Lake as a high mountain stream that follows the Cascade Lakes Highway. It eventually becomes a major whitewater river as it flows north to the Columbia. Along the way, it is interrupted by several dams. This trip begins at a dam near La Pine. Although the river cascades over several falls before reaching Bend, this 10-mile trip is flat, fast, and clear.
